Xoloitzcuintli Breed Guide

Learn More About the Xoloitzcuintli

  • Temperament

Xolos build strong bonds with their owners and are very loving towards their family. They have a tendency to build strong bonds with those that are responsible for their care, so each member of the family should take responsibility so your Xoloitzcuintli bonds with the entire family. Their intelligence allows them to take to training quickly, but owners should keep an eye out for "Small Dog Syndrome," which can lead to bad habits.

  • Health

Xolos are susceptible to conditions like patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and eye disorders. Their teeth should be brushed often with dog toothpaste to prevent gum disease and discomfort.

  • Activity Level

Xolos are energetic, but they are legendary for their ability to calm down once they have excercised. They love long walks and playtime with the family. Any type of excercise that involves their owners is a great option.

  • Grooming

Due to their light coat, or in some cases no coat, Xoloitzcuintlis require very little maintenance. Most maintenance is associated with their skin, which can have a tendency to dry out in the winter. Lotion can be used, but excessive use can lead to acne. Like all breeds, their nails should be trimmed regularly and their teeth and gums should be brushed daily to prevent gum disease and bad breath.

  • Shedding

The Xoloitzcuintli is mostly hairless and doesn't shed much. Because they have so little fur, these hypoallergenic dogs are great picks for people with allergies.

  • Appearance

The Xoloitzcuintli is typically hairless, but there are varieties of this breed that have a sparse coat. The hairless variety often has a tuft of hair on its head or tail. These dogs come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. They have large ears that stand upright similar to the ears of a bat.

  • History

The Xoloitzcuintli's origins trace back to Mexico over 3,000 years ago, and they were named for the Ancient Aztec god, Xolotl. They were considered sacred by the Aztecs, and were oftened buried by their owner's side as a sacrifice and to serve as guides into the next world. Today, Xolos are used primarily as dedicated companions that build strong bonds with their owners.
