Learn More About Wirehaired Pointing Griffons

  • Temperament

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons are very intelligent and take to training very quickly. They are outgoing and energetic, but can be shy around new people. They excel when they are given a job to do, but also make loving companions in the home if their excercise needs are met. As is expected with a hunting dog, they are extremely loyal and love spending time with their owners.

  • Health

They are a healthy breed and rarely experience major issues, but should be screened for things like hip dysplasia and eye disorders. They can be prone to ear infections, so they should be chekced regularly by the owner and at regular vet appointments.

  • Activity Level

They are very energetic and require consistent excercise to prevent becoming bored or unhappy. Their excercise should include mental stimulation as often as possible. They do best with families that have hikes, walks, and runs incorporated in their daily routine, and are willing to spend time playing in the home.

  • Grooming

While the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon sheds very lightly, their coat still requries regular grooming. Their coat should be brushed at least once a week to remove loose hair, and should be stripped every other week. Their ears have a tendency to trap moisture and should be checked and cleaned regularly to avoid infection.

  • Shedding

They shed very lightly throughout the year, and their wiry coat catches most of the loose hair before it falls into the home.

  • Appearance

Wirehaired Pointing Griffons have a very unique appearance due to their wiry coat that has a natural, disheveled look. Their face is framed by thick bushy eyebrows and fur around their mouth that resembles a beard and mustache. Their coat is often a steel grey color accented with brown and white.

  • History

They were developed in Europe during the 1800s in the attempt to create the perfect hunting dog. The breeds used to create the Griffon are unkown, most experts believe that a variety of spaniels and setters were bred with the Otterhound. They earned the nickname "The Supreme Gun Dog" due to their legendary abilites in the field.
