Welsh Springer Spaniel Breed Guide

Learn More About Welsh Springer Spaniels

  • Temperament

Welsh Springer Spaniels are happy, outgoing, and make great family companions. They grow very close to their owners and love going on adventures with their family. They love hiking and swimming but they can also calm down, making them great with children. They should be trained early and consistently, especially if you plan on taking them on hunting trips. They tend to be stubborn, so owners should be strong leaders.

  • Health

Welsh Springer Spaniels are generally very healthy, and responsible breeders will screen them for joint issues and eye disorders. Their ears should be checked for infection at every vet appointment.

  • Activity Level

They are a very active breed, and should have plenty of excercise to stay happy and healthy. They love going on long walks or hikes with their family, especially if swimming is involved. A large fenced in yard is encouraged so they have room to run and play with their family or other furry friends.

  • Grooming

Their waterproof coat should be groomed weekly to stay healthy. It should be brushed weekly to prevent tangling and matting, preferably with a stainless steel comb or brush. Their folded ears have a tendency to trap in moisture, so they should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection.

  • Shedding

You can expect your Welsh Springer Spaniel to shed lightly year round and moderately as the seasons change.

  • Appearance

Welsh Springer Spaniels are athletic and sturdy with a beautiful wavy coat. Their coat is a distintive blend of red and white, which beautifully complements their dark and lively eyes. There is slight feathering around their ears, tail, and legs, and their legs often feature red speckles. Their tapered head differentiates them from other spaniel breeds.

  • History

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is said to be the oldest of the spaniel breeds, and originated in Wales in the 13th century. They are descendants of the original spaniels of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain, but how they made their way to Wales is unkown. The springer in their name comes from their hunting techinques to "spring" their prey out of hiding. The Welsh variety was recognized as its own breed for the first time in the early 1900s.
