The Smart and Eager Tibetan Spaniel

Tibetan Spaniels are smart and sweet companions who were originally bred by Buddhist Monks in Tibet. They are loveable and good with children, making them a good family dog. They are not a true spaniel breed but were likely named that due to it's resemblance to small versions of hunting spaniels.

Learn More About Tibetan Spaniels

  • Temperament

Tibbies are smart and eager to please, but they're also independent thinkers. They'll excel at training when they decide to, so it's a good idea to start training early to motivate them later. They are devoted to their owners and crave human connections, so it's best not to leave them alone for an extended period of time. As a watchdog, they'll often try to find a perch to oversee the home. They'll also bark when startled or confronted by strangers.

  • Health

Common afflictions include progressive retinal arophy, a genetic disease of blindness, and portosystemic shunt, a blood vessel which bypasses the cleansing from the liver.

  • Activity Level

Tibbies have a moderate energy level and will enjoy a long daily walk or job.

  • Grooming

Trimming is required only around the feet. Regular brushing behind the ears is needed to prevent matting. Tibbies' coats don't typically mat in other areas. They do shed and bathing and brushing will help during shedding season.

  • Shedding

Tibbies do shed and can shed any time of year.

  • Appearance

The Tibetan Spaniel's silky double coat comes in many colors and can be solid, shaded and multi-colored. Possible colors are red, fawn, gold, white, cream, black and tan, and parti. There can also be white markings on the feet. They have a domed head with a short muzzle. Their ears hang down to their cheecks and they have a mane of hair around their neck.

  • History

Tibetan Spaniels were originally bred in Tibetan monasteries to look like "Little Lions". They were gifted to palaces of China and other Buddhist countries. They had keen eyesight and made great watchdogs while perched on monastery walls.
