The Boerboel can function as both a loving family dog and an excellent protector. Their protective instincts, strength, and size make them a poor choice for inexperienced dog owners or those unable to devote the time and effort needed for training. The Boerboel needs lots of socialization in order to become a well-adjusted companion. In the right home, however, these dogs are gentle giants. They tend to be very calm and docile, and they are also very affectionate with their families. When trained properly, Boerboels can do very well with children.

The Boerboel is pretty healthy for being a big dog. Occasionally this breed can develop heart disease, cancer, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, ectropion eyelids, entropion eyelids, and bloat.

Boerboels are playful and affectionate towards family, including children. Boerboels can be overprotective, however, and display aggression towards other dogs or strangers. They need a skilled and assertive trainer.

The South African Boerboel can be given baths as needed or around once a month. This breed should be brushed once a week to keep its coat and skin healthy, as well as to remove fur that's been shed. Like other dog breeds, the Boerboel will need its nails clipped on a regular basis and should have its ears checked frequently for signs of infection.

The South African Boerboel is a large dog that sheds moderately, so you can expect to find hair throughout your house with this breed. Because of how much they shed, the Boerboel is not a good fit for people with allergies.

Boerboels love activity, both physical and mental, so they'll love long walks and puzzling toys. They won't do well in an apartment and prefer a large, fenced-in yard.

The Boerboel is the only South African dog that was created to protect the home or farm. The word “Boerboel” comes from the Afrikaans/Dutch word “boer,” which means “farmer.” The breed’s exact origins are unknown, but experts think that the Boerboel descended from African dog breeds, as well as breeds brought into South Africa by Dutch, French, and English settlers. These dogs were bred over the centuries to eventually create the Boerboel as we know it today. The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially registered the Boerboel in 2015 into the Working dog group.
