A calm, devoted, and intelligent family dog

The Scotch Collie is a rare breed with wonderful qualities. Originally herding dogs for shepherds in the Scottish highlands, Scotch Collies are hard-working, devoted dogs that aren't high-strung. This breed is very intelligent and great at problem-solving. Scotch Collies are active without having an abundance of energy that needs to be burned off. These dogs can match the energy level of their family and are surprisingly calm despite their working background. Good with kids and protective over those they love, the Scotch Collie is a great addition to any family.

Learn More About Scotch Collies

  • Temperament

Scotch Collies are adaptable, intelligent, friendly, and devoted dogs. These dogs are calm while still being playful and loving with children. Their working background makes the Scotch Collie a good protector and watchdog for its family. Their high intelligence leads them to work through problems on their own. In fact, the famous dog Lassie was originally based on a Scotch Collie. Scotch Collies love spending time around people and have been known to pick up and shadow human emotions. This breed's ability to be in tune with its owner makes it a wonderful companion for many types of households.

  • Health

Scotch Collies are generally a very healthy breed. However, there are a few health conditions owners should be aware of. These include eye problems, hip dysplasia, and multi-drug resistance mutation (MDR1). Regular visits to the vet will help keep your Scotch Collie in good health.

  • Activity Level

Scotch Collies have a moderate energy level that is able to meet the activities of their owners. For example, this breed can spend a day herding livestock and then enjoy time lounging and relaxing with its family the next day. Scotch Collies can burn off energy with daily walks, play, and mentally stimulating games.

  • Grooming

The Scotch Collie is a naturally clean dog. These dogs have coats that stay clean and free of debris whether they're indoors or outdoors. Sticks, burs, and other debris will fall out of this breed's coat on their own. Scotch Collies are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, only needing to be brushed around once a week.

  • Shedding

The Scotch Collie is a moderate shedder that will shed more heavily during seasonal changes. This breed is not hypoallergenic and isn't a good fit for people with allergies.

  • Appearance

The Scotch Collie has a similar appearance to the Rough Collie that is associated with the Collie breed today. However, the Scotch Collie is distinguishable by its shorter muzzle, bigger eyes, and less fluffy coat. These dogs have a lean, athletic build with ears that can be either hanging down or upright and alert.

  • History

The Scotch Collie evolved over time to fit the needs of shepherds in Scotland's highlands. These dogs were very adaptable, helping out with various farm tasks such as herding livestock, pulling carts, and protecting farm property. When England began showing Scotch Collies in the 1860s, the breed began to change as a result of increased interest in breeding them. This rare breed almost disappeared entirely until a group of dedicated individuals brought these dogs back from the brink of extinction in the 1980s.
