  • Temperament

The Miniature Schnauzer is an alert and feisty breed that's loyal to its family. These dogs love being the center of attention, and they always want to be involved in whatever their family is doing. Miniature Schnauzers are playful dogs that typically get along well with children, especially if they are raised with them. Smart and attentive, Miniature Schnauzers are fairly easy to train, but they need a firm, yet calm, hand. It's important for Miniature Schnauzer owners to establish their authority early on to prevent the dog from thinking that they rule the house. These dogs love to bark, so they're not an ideal choice for apartment living. While they can be trained to bark less, it's a Miniature Schnauzer's inclination to bark, so it cannot be stopped entirely. However, this breed's tendency to bark makes it a great watchdog.

  • Health

They can suffer from pulmonic stenosis and pancreatitis, but otherwise enjoy good health. Miniature Schnauzers require typical visits to the vet and regular exercise to keep them healthy. They do need above average grooming.

  • Activity Level

The Miniature Schnauzer is known for its affection and love of children. Some early socialization is required, but this breed will still be wary of strangers. They were bred to be ratters, so keep them away from smaller pets like gerbils. They are a very smart breed that is eager to please.

  • Grooming

Because your Miniature Schnauzer is double-coated, they require brushing two to three times a week. They enjoy the benefits of being related to poodles, but their coat requires more maintenance than this relative. They will need to be professionally groomed every two months or so to keep their coat the correct length and free of odor. They tolerate all climates well.

  • Shedding

Despite the Miniature Schnauzer’s high grooming demands, the upside is that they do not shed much at all. They also do not produce much dander, making them hypoallergenic and the perfect companion for allergy sufferers.

  • Appearance

The Miniature Schnauzer is a double-coated breed that tends to be grey or salt and pepper colored. They have longer hair on their face, especially on the snout and above the eyes. Their muzzle is blunt and their body is well-muscled and square.

  • History

The Miniature Schnauzer is the smallest and most popular of the Schnauzers, and it originated in Germany during the late 1800s. The Miniature Schnauzer was developed by breeding the Standard Schnauzer down in size in order to create a smaller dog that was more suitable for chasing rats from barnyards. However, it wasn't until 1899 that the Miniature and Standard Schnauzers were recognized as separate breeds. The Miniature version was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1926, and it is the only Schnauzer to remain the Terrier group. Today, the breed has become a popular family pet and companion.
