Learn More About Schipperkes

  • Temperament

Schipperkes are small feisty dogs that can get into trouble, so they require an experienced trainer to handle. They like to be involved with children and family activity. They are very vigilant and will patrol your home for any intruders.

  • Health

Schipperkes are generally healthy dogs but could suffer from luxating patellas, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, eye problems, thyroid problems or MPS IIIB.

  • Activity Level

Schipperke have a moderate energy level with some need of mental stimulation. A brisk daily walk is recommended or they can blow off steam by racing around a fenced-in yard.

  • Grooming

Their coat needs moderate maintenance with weekly brushing. During periods of shedding, they may require more frequent brushing.

  • Shedding

Schipperkes shed a moderate amount, so you'll need to vacuum every week or two.

  • Appearance

Schipperkes normally have a shiny black coat but will very rarely have a blonde or cream coat. Their defining feature is a long ruff around their kneck that sometimes reaches their tail and hind legs. Some have docked tails but as this practice is declining, you'll find more with a curled tail.

  • History

Called "little captains," Shipperkes were first developed in medieval Belgium as on board exterminators for canal boats. They were also used as watchdogs for city shops. In 1690, they had the first "specialty show" where members of the shoemakers guild showed off their Shipperkes. Their popularity spread through Europe and ended up in America at the end of the 1800s.
