Learn More About Pointers

  • Temperament

Pointers are known for their ability to point and track birds out in the field, so they will be naturally curious and mischievous in open spaces. They demand human companionship, returning loyalty and affection to their owners. Pointers are a strong and physical breed so they may not be suitable for small children or older couples.

  • Health

Pointers enjoy relatively good health if they receive the proper amount of exercise and the correct diet. They can occasionally suffer from hip dysplasia. Plan to take your Pointer to regular vet visits. They require below-average grooming due to their short coats.

  • Activity Level

Because the Pointer is used in hunting and exploring open spaces, they have a high energy level. These dogs require above-average amounts of exercise and activity. They need to be physically and mentally challenged every day. They will not do well in small settings such as apartments.

  • Grooming

Your Pointer will need minimal grooming because its coat is naturally short and well-maintained. Weekly brushing may be required to control some moderate shedding. You will also need to clip their nails or have them professionally done every three weeks or so. You should only bathe your Pointer when necessary.

  • Shedding

The Pointer is known as a low-shedding dog. Their hair is short and will not get out of hand in your home. They are not considered hypoallergenic, so they are not recommended for allergy sufferers.

  • Appearance

The Pointer has perfect posture and a proud stance. These dogs were bred to remain alert and explore disturbances. The Pointer's coat is short, straight, and comes in three common colors: black, brown, and white. The Pointer is a medium-sized breed.

  • History

The Pointer is the consummate sporting dog and is named after its ability to point and locate birds in a field. These dogs originated in England, where they have been used as hunting dogs by the aristocracy since the 1600s. They were brought to the United States pre-Civil War for the purpose of hunting quail. They have been cherished as hunting dogs because of their ability to point and then remain still while the hunter prepares their shot. Today, Pointers are beloved family pets as well as hunting dogs.
