Pekingese Puppies

Despite its small size, the Pekingese is a brave little dog who possesses a ton of confidence and dignity. These dogs tend to be aloof around strangers, but some can be friendly and affectionate. Pekingese who are raised with children during puppyhood do very well with them, but Pekes who are not used to children may not be fond of them. Because of their self-important nature, Pekingese are a bit more difficult to train. They love getting their own way and have a tendency to be stubborn but respond well to firm, kind training, and positive reinforcement. If well-trained, the Pekingese makes a good-natured, affectionate companion that's very protective of its family.

The Pekingese is prone to getting eye infections because it doesn't have anything to protect their eyes or a long muzzle to keep out the hair and dirt. These dogs appreciate and love the cold, but due to their dense fur, may find the heat irritating and may have a hard time keeping cool in high temperatures.

The Pekingese has a low energy level and is usually quite calm. These dogs do need exercise, but playtime with their family is usually enough. They are more concerned with spending time with their owners than going on walks or hikes.

The Pekingese's long, thick coat is fairly high maintenance and requires frequent grooming to minimize shedding.

Pekingese shed a moderate to heavy amount of fur year-round.

Pekingese have long, straight, and dense coats that can feature black, fawn, brown, and gray colorings. They are known as the "Lion Dog," due to their fur colorings and the fact that their coat is heavier around the face. They have a large head for their size, and their dark eyes convey a confident expression.

The Pekingese is one of the oldest dog breeds, and it is believed to have existed in China for as long as 2,000 years. They were used most commonly as companions for nobility and members of the imperial family. In fact, these dogs were treated as royalty themselves and were even pampered by servants. The Pekingese made their way to England during the 1800s when five of them were taken as prizes of the Opium War. As time went on, more Pekingese were brought to the Western world. Eventually, the breed appeared in the United States, and the first Pekingese was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1906. Shortly afterward, the Pekingese Club of America was formed in 1909.
