Mini Australian Shepherds' double coats should be brushed weekly, possibly daily during shedding season. This helps keep out tangles, dirt, and loose hair.

Mini Australian Shepherds shed a fair amount and go through a shedding season once or twice per year.

The Mini Australian Shepherd's medium-length double coat comes in a variety of colors including black, blue merle, red merle, and red, with or without white or tan markings. Their eyes also come in a variety of colors including brown, blue, hazel, and amber. Their tails are naturally curly or docked.

In the 1960s U.S. rodeo circuit, Australian Shepherds were bred down in size to become a new breed, originally called the Miniature Australian Shepherd. This smaller breed rose in popularity as a traveling companion for horse shows. Since 2015, this breed can be registered with the AKC as the Miniature American Shepherd, and is also known in many places as the Mini Aussie.
