Learn More About Manchester Terrier Standards

  • Temperament

The Manchester Terrier is an intelligent, confident breed that forms strong bonds with its humans. They adore love and attention but can be reserved around people they do not know. Manchester Terriers are typically amiable with children, but they may not do well with small animals because of their instinct to hunt them.

  • Health

Manchester Terriers are sensitive to anesthesia, so if they ever require surgery vets should use caution. They can also be vulnerable to juvenile cardiomyopathy, which unfortunately can't be detected with genetic testing. They can also be prone to patellar luxation, a condition common among small breeds.

  • Activity Level

Manchester Terriers are energetic dogs who require regular exercise to maintain their mental and physical health. Despite their couch potato tendencies, these dogs are always eager for a game of fetch or a romp around the yard. This breed is also known to excel at dog sports, such as agility and tracking.

  • Grooming

Their short coat is easy to maintain, and they will typically enjoy grooming as quality time with their owner. They don't require regular brushing, but wiping down their coat with a wet cloth or grooming mit will maintain their coat's beautiful shine. Occasional baths with dog shampoo will also keep their coat looking its best.

  • Shedding

Manchester Terriers will shed year round, with heavier shedding during the spring and fall.

  • Appearance

The Manchester Terrier is a relatively small breed with a sleek, refined appearance. Their short, sleek coats are black with tan markings and don't require much maintenance.

  • History

The Manchester Terrier was bred in 19th century England to control vermin populations, most notably rats. It was originally a mix between the Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet.
