Maltipoo Breed Guide

Learn More About Maltipoos

  • Temperament

Maltipoos are active, friendly, and loving. They are the ideal companion for anyone who's looking for a loyal dog that forms strong human bonds. It's important to note that, since they are so devoted to their family, Maltipoos can develop separation anxiety if they are left by themselves too often or for too long. However, if you are able to give a Maltipoo the attention and affection it needs, the breed is generally calm and even-tempered. While not overly energetic, Maltipoos still enjoy a moderate amount of exercise daily. These dogs also make good playmates for well-behaved children, so they're wonderful family dogs. As long as they are properly trained and cared for, Maltipoos are well-behaved, delightful pets.

  • Health

With proper care, the Maltipoo will live to between 10 and 15 years. They enjoy relatively good health as long as they get plenty of exercise and eat a solid diet. They only require regular visits to the vet for checkups.

  • Activity Level

The Maltipoo is a cuddly ball of energy and requires exercise and attention. They love the outdoors and playing with family members. They are also very intelligent so games of fetch should be played frequently to keep them focused and engaged. They require walks every day to stay healthy. That doesn't mean their energy level is uncontrollable because they are also happy to take long rests during the day.

  • Grooming

One of the most popular traits of the Maltipoo is its low grooming requirements. They only need brushing once a week and rarely develop an odor or need for bathing. Pay attention to their ears and eyes. If you need to, gently wipe around the eyes to clear any accumulation and look for dirt in their ears. Clip their nails if you hear clicking on the floor as they walk.

  • Shedding

The Maltipoo is hypoallergenic and does not shed. This is one of the reasons it is such a popular Poodle mix breed.

  • Appearance

The dominant appearance trait in the Maltipoo is its Toy Poodle side, so it will resemble a Poodle in color and shape. Its coat will be short and curly white. Its head is round with medium-sized ears and adorable dark eyes.

  • History

The Maltipoo is a popular designer dog breed that is a cross between the Maltese and the Poodle. Maltipoos were likely developed in an attempt to combine the temperament of the Maltese with the non-shedding coat of the Poodle. Like most designer dogs, not much is known about the Maltipoo's history and origins. No one person can be credited with being the first to breed a Maltipoo, but it is believed that the breed originated in the United States sometime during the 1980s or 90s. Despite having two purebred parents, the Maltipoo itself is not a purebred dog, which makes it ineligible for American Kennel Club (AKC) registration. The Maltipoo is still recognized by several smaller dog clubs, like the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
