An intelligent, loving, and social breed

Often called the "Little Lion Dog," the Lowchen not only resembles a lion but has the bravery of one, too. They tend to think they are bigger than they really are, but at heart, these little dogs are lovable and adore their humans.

Lowchen Breed Guide

Learn More About Lowchen

  • Temperament

Originally bred to be a companion dog, the Lowchen is a little dog with a big heart. These dogs are loving, outgoing, and intelligent, and they get along well with children and other animals. Adaptable and calm, the Lowchen is a great choice for apartment dwellers, but they can thrive in a wide range of different environments.

  • Health

Lowchens are generally very healthy dogs. Like other breeds, Lowchens may be susceptible to common canine health issues like hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, and cataracts.

  • Activity Level

The Lowchen is a moderately active dog who enjoys long walks, trips to the dog park, or games of fetch in the yard. These smart dogs like a good challenge, so it's important that they get plenty of mental stimulation in addition to physical activity.

  • Grooming

The Lowchen will need to be brushed every couple of days and bathed every few weeks to keep its coat healthy and free of tangles. This breed will need to be consistently trimmed to keep its coat from becoming overgrown. Like with other breeds, owners need to regularly trim their Lowchen's nails, brush their teeth, and clean out their ears.

  • Shedding

The Lowchen is a light shedder and is considered to be hypoallergenic. This breed is a good fit for households with pet dander allergies.

  • Appearance

The Lowchen is a tiny dog with a compact, well-proportioned body. Often cut in a "lion clip," their coats are long, dense, wavy, and can come in just about any color.

  • History

While the initial origin of the Lowchen is unknown, this breed can be traced back to Germany, Holland, Spain, Italy, Russia, and France. Existing as far back as the Middle Ages, the Lowchen can be found in Renaissance art, looking similar to the breed's present-day appearance. Lowchens were loved by the upper class and were companion dogs to many noble women. In 1995, the Lowchen was registered with the American Kennel Club's miscellaneous class and was later entered into the non-sporting group in 1999.
