A protective, playful, and loving breed

Lakeland Terriers are one of the oldest terrier breeds and were originally used to protect flocks from foxes and other predators. Their fearlessness has led many to describe them as a "big dog in a small package," and they work hard to protect their family

Learn More About Lakeland Terriers

  • Temperament

Lakeland Terriers are fearless protectors but with their families are often playful and affectionate. They make good companions for older children but should be supervised around younger kids. They are intelligent and pick up on training quickly, but they do have a tendency to be stubborn.

  • Health

Lakeland Terriers are one of the most healthy breeds and don't have any known genetic health risks.

  • Activity Level

Lakeland Terriers have a moderate energy level and should receive about 30 minutes of exercise each day. They enjoy long walks or short runs and do well in homes with large fenced-in yards for them to play in. Their exercise should include mental stimulation as often as possible.

  • Grooming

The Lakeland Terrier's double coat requires hand plucking and weekly brushing to remain clean of mats and tangle. You can also clip the coat but it will change the color and texture of their coat over time.

  • Shedding

The Lakeland Terrier doesn't shed much, making them a hypoallergetic breed.

  • Appearance

Lakeland Terriers are solidly built and narrow, with a unique rectangular head. Their coat is short, dense, and wiry, and is seen in black, gray, brown, fawn, and cream colorings. Their fur is often feathered around the face and legs, which accentuates their square shape.

  • History

The Lakeland Terrier was a working man's terrier used in British fox hunts. They originated in the Lake District of Northern England.
