The Kooikerhondje is lively, good-natured, and confident. They are an ancient breed and can be seen in art dating back to the middle ages. They were originally used for duck hunting in the Netherlands and have since grown into faithful family companions.

    Kooikerhondjes are adaptable family companions that are easy to train and eager to please. With early socialization, they love being around all people but may be wary of unexpected visitors in their homes. They love performing tasks and do so with a cheery disposition.

    Kooikerhondhjes are realatively healthy but could be susceptible to Polymyositis, Renal Disorders or Epilepsy.

  • Activity Level

    Kooikerhondjes have a moderate energy level and should receive about 45 minutes of exercise per day. They are very adaptable to the lifestyle of their owners, but that doesn't mean they are OK with no exercise. They love exploring the outdoors on hikes with their owners and playing in a fenced-in yard.

    Kooikerhondjes should get a good brushing every week, which will help with shedding. You might want to brush more often during shedding season. Only bathe when they get smelly.

    The Kooikerhondje sheds a moderate amount, and heavier in the shedding season.

  • Appearance

    Kooikerhondjes proudly carry themselves by holding their head high and their tail level with their body. Their coats are either red and white or orange and white, any other colors are not accepted by the breed standard. Their large feathered ears often feature black tips.

  • History

    The Kooikerhondje's origins date back to medieval duck hunts, when Dutch hunters would trap ducks before the invention of gunpowder. The breed diminished as guns were created and made duck hunting more efficient. The breed was brought back by Baronesse von Hardenbroek van Ammerstol in the mid-20th century.
