Irish Terrier Breed Guide

Learn More About Irish Terriers

  • Temperament

The Irish Terrier is a brave, assertive breed that is lively, curious, and independent. These dogs are always up for adventure and activity. Irish Terriers may be aggressive toward other dogs and small animals, so they need to be the only pet in the house. While loyal to their families, Irish Terriers are typically reserved around strangers.

  • Health

The Irish Terrier is generally a healthy breed. However, some health conditions owners will want to be aware of include hyperkeratosis, cataracts, and cystinuria.

  • Activity Level

Irish Terriers are high-energy dogs who are always up for a good time. They need frequent exercise, and romping in a fenced backyard is an excellent way for them to do it. Walking is also a good choice, as long as they are taken outside on a leash several times a day.

  • Grooming

The Irish Terrier doesn't need a ton of grooming. Owners can brush their Irish Terriers once a week and give them monthly baths to keep their coats in good shape. The Irish Terrier will need to have its coat stripped by a professional groomer a couple of times a year.

  • Shedding

Irish Terriers shed very lightly and are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. This breed is a good fit for households with allergies.

  • Appearance

Irish Terriers are commonly recognized by their bright red coat that is wiry, thick, and dense. These dogs have longer bodies and legs than other terriers, and they also have V-shaped heads and scruffy beards.

  • History

The Irish Terrier is believed to be one of the oldest Terrier breeds despite the limited knowledge surrounding its origins. These skilled and adaptable dogs acted as watchdogs, hunting dogs, ratters, and livestock protectors throughout Ireland. The Irish Terrier made its way to the US in the late 1800s and was registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885.
