Learn More About Ibizan Hounds

  • Temperament

The Ibizan Hound is a powerful hunter that is graceful, yet strong. At home, they have a calm presence, which some compare to that of a deer, and they make caring and devoted companions. The Beezer's gentle disposition makes it a good choice for families with children.

  • Health

Despite their tendency to be healthy dogs, there are a few health conditions Ibizan Hound owners should be aware of. These include ear infections, congenital deafness, autoimmune thyroiditis, eye problems, hip dysplasia, and axonal dystrophy.

  • Activity Level

The Ibizan Hound's energy level isn't over the top, but they should still receive a few daily walks or runs. Keep in mind that these dogs should always be confined by a fence that is at least 6 feet high when outside without a leash, as they are great jumpers and could run off.

  • Grooming

Ibizan Hounds need to be brushed once a week to keep their coats healthy and free of loose fur. Owners will need to regularly check and clean these dogs' ears to prevent wax build-up that leads to ear infections. Ibizan Hounds generally need baths around once a month, or when necessary.

  • Shedding

Despite its short coat and not being a heavy shedder, the Ibizan Hound is not hypoallergenic and isn't an ideal dog for people with allergies.

  • Appearance

Ibizan Hounds have sleek, athletic bodies and coats that can be either smooth or wire, both of which are fairly easy to maintain. This breed's coat coloring can be white, red, or a combination of both.

  • History

Originating in the Balearic Islands, the Ibizan Hound came from Egyptian hounds that Phoenician traders brought to the islands around 800 BC. These dogs were used for hunting rabbits, hares, and other small prey. Due to limited food on the islands, these hounds were used by islanders to hunt for meals. Through time and breeding, the Ibizan Hound we know today was created. The Ibizan Hound didn't reach the United States until 1956 and was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1978. Today, this ancient breed remains rare.
