Havapoo Breed Guide

Learn More About Havapoos

  • Temperament

Havapoos are friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that thrive on being around people. They love being the center of attention and get along well with just about everyone. Havapoos are very good with children and other pets, so they are a great choice for families with kids. In fact, the Havapoo does well in just about any type of home, as long as they receive plenty of attention. In terms of activity level, Havapoos aren't overly energetic, but they should still get a decent amount of exercise every day. Havapoos are smart dogs, so be sure to stimulate them mentally, too. All things considered, if you're looking for a friendly and playful family dog, the Havapoo makes a great choice!

  • Health

Havapoos have the possibility of inheriting health problems from either parent, including hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye issues, deafness, thyroid issues, Addison's disease, and epilepsy

  • Activity Level

The Havapoo has a moderate energy level, but that doesn't mean they'll spend hours lounging on the couch. These spunky dogs still have energy that they'll need to expend on a daily basis. A long walk or some time to run freely in a secure area are great ways for Havapoos to get their exercise.

  • Grooming

Havapoos are not difficult to groom, typically needing to be brushed once or twice a week and the occassional trimming to prevent tangles.

  • Shedding

Havapoos don't shed thanks to their poodle parent, making them hypoallergenic. Because they are light shedders, this breed is a great choice for people with allergies.

  • Appearance

Like with most hybrid dogs, it's difficult to say for sure what a Havapo will look like. However, most have floppy ears and small, rectangular bodies that are low to the ground. A Havapoo's coat can vary from medium-length to long, and wavy to curly.

  • History

The Havapoo is a lovable designer dog that is a hybrid of the Havanese and the Poodle, typically a Toy or Miniature. Sometimes called the "Poovanese," the Havapoo is a relatively new designer dog breed. Some say that interest in the Havapoo only peaked in the United States in the late 2010s, but the breed has been around for a little while longer. It's possible that the Havapoo was created in the 1990s during the peak of the designer dog trend, but no one knows for sure. This, unfortunately, is the case for most designer breeds. While not eligible for registration with the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Havapoo was recognized by the International Designer Canine Association (ADCA) in 2009.
