Frenchton: The Affectionate Mix Between a French Bulldog and Boston Terrier

Frenchtons are a crossbreed between a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier. The hopes of this crossbreed was to produce a healthier version of a French Bulldog that still looks similar. The result is usually 75% French Bulldog and 25% Boston Terrier, with the breed getting the Frenchie's looks with the athleticism of the Boston Terrier

Learn More About Frenchtons

  • Temperament

Both the French Bulldog and the Boston Terrier are wonderful companions, so it's no surprise that the Frenchton also makes an outstanding companion dog. These dogs are very adaptable and are well-suited for many different types of households. They are great with children and families, but can also thrive in one-person homes as well. In either case, Frenchtons are at their happiest when being in the company of their human "pack," and they love attention and affection. Due to the intelligence and eagerness to please of the Boston Terrier, the Frenchton is obedient and easy to train. These dogs are not known to bark much, so they are a good choice for apartment dwellers. All in all, if you're looking for a great family companion, you can't go wrong with a Frenchton!

  • Health

Frenchtons could suffer from the same conditions as their parents, a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier, including eye problems, digestive issues, and respiratory problems.

  • Activity Level

Like the French Bulldog, Frenchtons only require about 30 minutes of exercise per day to stay happy and healthy. This exercise should require mental and physical stimulation, and your daily walk should change routes to avoid boredom. Frenchtons can have difficulty breathing, and shouldn't be allowed to over exert themselves in heat and humidity.

  • Grooming

Frenchtons have a short, shiny coat which is generally easy to maintain. Brushing their coat once or twice a week should work well.

  • Shedding

Boston Terriers don't shed much but French Bulldogs shed a bit more. So, you can expect a Frenchton to lightly or moderately shed but not heavily.

  • Appearance

Most Frenchtons resemble their French Bulldog parent, and feature the same defining bat ears that Frenchies are known for. They are sturdy, but have longer legs than the French Bulldog which allows them to be more athletic.

  • History

The Frenchton is a delightful hybrid of a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier. Like most designer dogs, the Frenchton originated in the United States during the 1990s. It is believed that this breed was originally bred to reduce health issues of the parent breeds, especially the French Bulldog's respiratory issues. As a result, the Frenchton has a longer snout than the French Bulldog, which makes breathing much easier. Despite having two purebred parents, the Frenchton is not a purebred dog. However, it is recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR), the American Canine Hybrid Association (ACHA), and several other smaller dog clubs.
