  • Temperament

    This fun-loving breed is said to mature slowly, and remains a puppy at heart well into adult years. They are extremely affectionate and get along great with children and other dogs. Their size may intimidate strangers, but Flat Coats typically greet strangers with a lick rather than a growl. They are eager to please and very smart, make them easy to train.

    Flat-Coated Retrievers are generally healthy, but could be subject to Hip Dysplasia, Malignant Histiocytosis, Lymphosarcoma, Hemangiosarcoma, Osteosarcoma, Patellar Luxation, or Bloat.

  • Activity Level

    Flat Coats are a medium/high energy dog that requires about an hour of activity per day. They love playtime with their family so they can exercise their goofy nature, and a nice long walk should be enough to get their energy out.

  • Grooming

    The Flat-Coated Retrievers medium-length coat should be brushed and combed to remove dirt and loose hairs weekly. They should only bathe when needed.

  • Shedding

    Flat-Coated Retrievers are heavy shedders but regular brushing can reduce the shedding.

    Flat-Coated Retrievers are a large dog with a straight coat that can be black or brown. Their feathered ears hang close to their head, and their legs and tails are feathered as well. Because of their goofy nature, their feathered tail is almost always wagging and never curled.

    Flat-coated Retrievers were developed to fetch waterfowl from the water in the mid-1800s. They used to be the most popular retriever until Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers took the top spots.
