English Toy Spaniels typically get along well with other dogs, although they might be hesitant around strangers. Although ETs are friendly with children, they may be overwhelmed by a small child's noise and enthusiasm.

  • Health

English Toy Spaniels could be prone to Patellar Luxation, Patent Ductus Arteriosis, MItral Valve Insufficiency, Cleft Palate, Cryptorchidism, Seborrhea, Retinal Dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, Hydrocephalus, Umbilical Hernias, Open Fontanel, or Fused Toes.

  • Activity Level

English Toy Spaniels have a fairly low energy level, and they don't need much exercise. They're quite content to spend their days sitting on your lap. A leisurely stroll around the neighborhood is enough to satisfy this pup's activity requirements. Due to their low exercise demands, English Toy Spaniels make great companions for seniors.

  • Grooming

Brush your English Toy Spaniel at least twice a week with a pin or soft-bristle brush. You can also use a dog comb to gently work through any tangles that start to form. Do not let tangles linger, as they'll turn into uncomfortable mats. They should be trimmed regularly around their face and paws to keep neat and clean. Bathing every month or two will keep their coat clean and healthy.

  • Shedding

The Englsih Toy Spaniel's long, wavy fur sheds a moderate amount.

  • Appearance

In terms of appearance, the English Toy Spaniel looks quite similar to its cousin, the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, but smaller. ETs have a square, compact body and a long, silky coat that comes in one of four different color patterns.

  • History

The exact origins of the English Toy Spaniel are hard to nail down. Some speculate they were brought to Europe in ancient times from Japan. Others believe they were imported to Asia from Spain, where they were refined and then returned to Europe. Toy Spaniels became a favorite breed of many aristocratic families during the Renaissance. Notably, they became a favorite of King Charles II, who permitted them to be the only dogs allowed in British Parliament. In Victorian times, Toy Spaniels were further developed into the modern English Toy Spaniel by mixing in a little Pug and Japanese Chin.
