Learn More About English Shepherds

  • Temperament

The English Shepherd is a brave and tough dog who loves having a job to do. These dogs love to please and are very obedient and responsive to their owners. English Shepherds are naturally suspicious of strangers, but they are devoted to their families and can be quite protective, making them great watchdogs.

  • Health

English Shepherds are generally healty but they can suffer from Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, or cataracts.

  • Activity Level

These dogs have a good deal of energy, so be sure to devote at least one hour per day to exercising your English Shepherd. This breed will enjoy long walks, jogs, hikes, and plenty of playtime. Once they've gotten enough activity, English Shepherds are more than happy to snooze next to you on the couch.

  • Grooming

The English Shepherd's thick, glosy coat requires twice-weekly brushing to remain soft. They should be bathed as needed.

  • Shedding

Keep the vacuum handy because English Shepherds are heavy shedders, especially during shedding season.

  • Appearance

Built for physical activity, the English Shepherd is agile and muscular. Their coats are medium-length and can range from straight to wavy, or even curly. The English Shepherd's coat can be a variety of colors but is usually black, white, tan, or some combination of the three.

  • History

Despite their name, English Shepherds are actually an American creation decendant from English and Scottish shepherding dogs brought to the U.S. in the 1800s. They were bred to be an all-around farm dog who could hunt vermin, herd, and be a watchdog.
