Learn More About English Foxhounds

  • Temperament

The English Foxhound is a noble family member that enjoys the company of both humans and other pets. Their tolerant and gentle disposition makes this breed a good choice for families with children. Around strangers, English Foxhounds may be reserved.

  • Health

The English Foxhound doesn't have many breed-specific health concerns. However, their large size and deep chests make them susceptible to bloat. Their hanging ears can also create problems like ear infections if they are not properly dried and cleaned out regularly.

  • Activity Level

Bred to run nonstop for hours, English Foxhounds are extremely energetic dogs. They need at least an hour of rigorous physical activity every day. These dogs can become destructive if they are not properly exercised, so be sure that you can keep up with the English Foxhound's activity requirements.

  • Grooming

English Foxhounds are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. These dogs can be brushed on a weekly basis to manage shedding and keep their coats healthy. Because they have ears that hang down, English Foxhound owners need to inspect and clean out their dogs' ears once a week. This breed should be bathed around once a month and need their ears to be completely dried out afterward to prevent ear infections.

  • Shedding

Despite their short hair, English Foxhounds are moderate shedders that shed more heavily during season changes.

  • Appearance

English Foxhounds are well-proportioned dogs with an athletic build and a dignified appearance. They have a strong, wide back and a muscular body. The English Foxhound's coat is short and coarse and can be nearly any color.

  • History

After deer populations began to decrease in the 1700s, the English turned to hunting foxes for sport. After breeding their hunting hounds with fast dogs like the Greyhound, English Foxhounds were created sometime around the 1600-1700s. These dogs were owned by upper-class aristocrats and used for sport. Soon after making its way to the United States toward the end of the 18th century, the English Foxhound became a hunting hound for wealthy Virginians like George Washington. George Washington went on to create another version of the English Foxhound that is now known as the American Foxhound. This breed went on to be registered by the American Kennel Club in 1909 before becoming a rare breed in the United States.
