Learn More About English Cocker Spaniels

  • Temperament

English Cocker Spaniels have a great disposition and are happy, playful dogs. They have a high level of loyalty to their people and love being in the company of others. Families with children will enjoy these dogs because of their pleasant temperament and small size.

  • Health

English Cocker Spaniels tend to be healthy dogs, but there are some breed-specific health issues owners should know about. These conditions include adult-onset neuropathy, deafness, hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, and familial nephropathy.

  • Activity Level

For English Cocker Spaniels, daily exercise is essential. Fetch, a trip to the dog park, or some backyard play time can keep these dogs happy. English Cockers are natural runners and will happily accompany you on a job after they reach one year of age.

  • Grooming

English Cocker Spaniels need to be brushed at least once a week to keep their undercoats free from tangles and their shedding under control. This breed should be trimmed every month around their face, paws, ears, middle, tail, and legs. Owners can trim their dogs at home or take them to professional groomers. Because English Cocker Spaniels have ears that hang down, it's especially important for these dogs to have their ears checked for signs of infection and cleaned regularly.

  • Shedding

The English Cocker Spaniel is a moderate shedder throughout the year, making this breed a bad fit for people with allergies.

  • Appearance

The appearance of an English Cocker features a long, square snout, black eyes, and hanging ears. Their long, silky coats typically have feathering at the ends. The color of an English Cocker's coat is usually combinations of black, red, liver, tan, and/or white.

  • History

Despite being traced back as early as the 1300s, Spaniel breeds weren't separated into Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels until the late 1800s. The English Cocker Spaniel became distinct from the smaller American Cocker Spaniel when these English dogs were registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1935.
