Despite its independence, the Dutch Shepherd is loyal, eager to please, and obedient to its owners. Reliable and tenacious, Dutch Shepherds make diligent watch dogs. Due to this pup's introverted nature, it's important that it's well socialized, especially during puppyhood.

Dutch Shepherds are very healthy breed who rarely have health conditions. Long-hairs could have thyroid issues. Rough-hairs could have goniodysplasia. Finally, all coat types could have hip dysplasia.

Known for its versatility, the Dutch Shepherd is a highly active dog that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. A farm or a home with a fenced-in yard is ideal for this breed. Dutch Shepherds also excel in dog sports such as agility competitions, herding, and field training.

Short-hairs should be brushed occasionally and daily during the shedding season. Long-hairs should be groomed once a week. Rough-hairs should be combed once a month and hand stripped twice per year. All coat types should be bathed as needed, when they become stinky.

The amount your Dutch Shepherd sheds depends on what type of coat they have, but all will shed during the shedding seasons of Spring and Fall.
