Chinese Crested Breed Guide

Learn More About Chinese Cresteds

  • Temperament

The Chinese Crested is a tenacious, alert breed with a kind demeanor. These dogs are highly devoted to their owners and are great with children and other pets. However, most are reserved around strangers and do not accept unfamiliar people easily. Though Cresteds are not known for barking, they do enjoy digging. They also adore attention and cuddles, so it’s best not to leave them alone for lengthy periods of time. Otherwise, they may develop separation anxiety and become destructive when by themselves.

  • Health

Chinese Cresteds are generally healthy but could be prone to certain health conditions, such as dental issues, progressive retinal atrophy, legg-calve-perthes disease or keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

  • Activity Level

Thirty minutes of brisk activity or a quality walk should be all you need to satisfy the Chinese Crested. Similar to many small breeds, you may start to notice your dog exerting themselves in bursts of energy throughout the day that can become predictable. Sync this routine with exercise for best results!

  • Grooming

Without any fur, you would think the Chinese Crested doesn't have any grooming needs. This isn't the case, as their skin requires care. You might need to apply different skin treatments, like sunscreen or acne lotions.

  • Shedding

The Chinese Crested doesn't have much fur to shed, so they are hypoallegetic.

  • Appearance

At about one foot tall, the unmistakable spike at the top of the Chinese Crested head will always be its most distinguishing feature. Although there is a variety known as the "powderpuff" version that features a remarkable, soft and silky coat, more often than not the bare skinned pink and black chested variation is seen.

  • History

There are differing opinions on the origins of the Chinese Crested, but most agree that it is a long-established breed that dates back to 16th-century China. Although some say that the breed came from Mexico, and others claim it originated in Africa. Nevertheless, while the origins of the Chinese Crested are debatable, the breed’s appeal is undeniable. In fact, there are famous entertainers who have owned and promoted the breed over the years. In 1991, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Chinese Crested as an official breed.
