Learn More About Canaan Dogs

  • Temperament

Canaan Dogs are a unique combination of affectionate, loyal, and independent. They are natural watchdogs, and will bark when someone enters your home until they are sure you are aware of the situation. They can be aloof with strangers, which can easily be taken care of with early socialization. Properly socialized Canaan Dogs love their family, and are adaptable to many different living situations.

  • Health

The Canaan dog is a healthy breed, and their small group of invested breeders do a great job at ensuring the health of their stock. Like all breeds, their ears should be checked regularly and their nails should be kept trimmed.

  • Activity Level

They require a moderate amount of exercise, and do well in any living environment as long as they have daily walks or exercise. They love obedience training, and other exercise that exercises their body and mind.

  • Grooming

Canaan dogs do a good job at keeping themselves clean, and don't require frequent baths. During their shedding season they will require regular brushing to remove loose hair and prevent heavy shedding.

  • Shedding

The Canaan Dog's double coat will shed moderately year round, and more heavily during the spring and fall.

  • Appearance

Their most distinct features are their erect, low set ears. Their outer coat is dense, harsh, and short to medium-length. Their colors range widely from black to cream, with shades of red and brown also being common.

  • History

Canaan Dogs are an ancient breed and were named for the area that is now Israel, Lebanon, and other surrounding countries. There have been artifacts found dating back as far as 4,000 years that very closely resemble the Canaan Dog. In the year 70, when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, Canaan dogs fled to the desert and lived in the wild until the 20th century.
