Learn More About Brussels Griffons

  • Temperament

Brussels Griffons are very devoted dogs that have a tendency to bond with one human more than others. They are not shy, however, and can get along well with just about anyone, including strangers, children, and other animals.

  • Health

Brussels Griffons can be susceptible to heart problems, eye defects, and hip dysplasia. Like most flat-nosed breeds, they can have difficulty breathing in sunny and hot weather.

  • Activity Level

The Brussels Griffon is a fairly active breed that's always on the lookout for action. They are naturally curious dogs who need daily mental stimulation, in addition to physical exercise. Due to their small size, Griffons can be adequately exercised indoors, making them a good choice for apartment dwellers.

  • Grooming

The amount of grooming a Brussels Griffon requires depends on which coat they inherit. Smooth coat Griffons require weekly brushings and occasional baths to remove dirt and debris. Rough coat Griffons do not shed, but hair around their muzzle may require trimming.

  • Shedding

Brussels Griffons can have two different coats, which will determine how much they shed. The rough coat does not shed, and the smooth coat will shed lightly year round, and slightly more as the seasons change.

  • Appearance

The Brussels Griffon is a tiny dog that's known for its domed head, short nose, and underbite. Their coats can be either wiry or smooth and come in a variety of colors including combinations of red, black, and tan.

  • History

The Brussels Griffon descended from the Affenpinscher and Belgian street dogs, which were bred to create the Griffon in the 1700s. In the 19th century the Griffon was bred with the Pug, which created the smooth coat variety.
