Briquet Griffon Vendéen Breed Guide

Learn More About Briquet Griffon Vendéens

  • Temperament

This easygoing breed is perfect around children and other animals alike. Bred as a pack dog of the hound group, the lively nature of this dog makes it a fun family pet. Although they can be trained with patience, they are better off bribed in the right direction of a goal action!

  • Health

Briquet Griffon Vendéens can be prone to conditions such as epilepsy, congenital deafness, hypothyroidism, allergies, and collie eye anomaly.

  • Activity Level

A reliable companion animal or hunting partner, the Briquet Griffon lives up to a hound's reputation in that it requires a lot of exercise. Their stubbornness can be eased with enough play and walks, which should make training considerably easier.

  • Grooming

Their thick and dense double coat can be difficult to maintain, but a regular routine will ease the burden. Their wiry outercoat easiy picks up dirt and debris which will need to be brushed out regularly. This wiry coat also can cause debris and dirt to gather in the ears, which should be cleaned regularly to avoid infection.

  • Shedding

Briquet Griffon Vendéens will shed moderately year round, but with regular brushing this can be kept to a minimum.

  • Appearance

White and black or black and tan tend to be the most common color combinations for this breed. Straight front legs rest at a slight angle from the back legs while upright, with a short back and wiry tail. Their double coat compliments a slightly domed skull.

  • History

Briquet Griffon Vendéen lineage can be traced back to the 1600s and the Grand Griffon Vendeen, a very similar breed that is slightly larger. In the 1700s breeders were looking for a smaller hunting dog, and began breeding the Briquet Griffon Vendéen. The breed almost went extinct during WW2, but they were brought back and are now used as both hunting dogs and family companions.
