Boykin Spaniel Breed Guide

Learn More About Boykin Spaniels

  • Temperament

Boykin Spaniels were bred to hunt, but they also make loyal and loving family companions. With early socialization they are great with children of all ages, and they are typically easy to train. They love to play and have plenty of energy, so a large yard is encouraged. Because of their origins, they still love nothing more than accompanying their families on adventures and hunting trips.

  • Health

Boykin Spaniels are usually very healthy, but they can be susceptible to conditions like hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, excercise-induced collapse. Their ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to avoid infection, and their nails should be trimmed regularly.

  • Activity Level

The Boykin Spaniel is a working dog and needs quite a bit of daily exercise. Aside from physical activity, it's also important to keep this breed mentally stimulated by giving them a "job" to do.

  • Grooming

Their coat doesn't require much maintenance to stay healthy. A weekly brushing will keep the coat looking its best and remove loose hair and dirt. They only need occasional baths to keep their coat and skin healthy.

  • Shedding

The Boykin Spaniel sheds year-round and is not hypoallergenic. This breed's thick undercoat causes it to shed more heavily when the seasons change in the spring and fall.

  • Appearance

Boykin Spaniels are a medium sized, compact, and well proportioned dog. Their large ears reach to the tip of their nose and are covered in long, wavy hair. Their coat is most commonly found in a solid brown coloring, and can also feature a white spot on their chest. Their paws are perfectly suited for swimming, and their toes are webbed.

  • History

Boykin Spaniels are a fairly new breed, and are one of few breeds recognized by the AKC that were created in the 20th century. It is said that the Boykin Spaniel originated in Spartanburg, South Carolina where Lemuel Boykin found a small brown dog outside of his church. He took this dog hunting, and found that it was perfectly suited for hunting and swimming. Boykin built a new breeding plan around this dog, combining him with breeds like the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, and American Water Spaniel. They were extremely popular in South Carolina for years, and have since become popular around the country.
