Learn More About Border Terriers

  • Temperament

The Border Terrier is an excellent choice for a solo or family pet, as they are intelligent and easy to train. With minimal effort, you can teach this breed how to please you, which it will be very keen to continue to do! The cliche of a little dog with a big personality certainly applies here as well.

  • Health

Border Terriers are healhy dogs but should always be screened for health issues like allergies, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, heart conditions, seizures, and cataracts.

  • Activity Level

This is a wonderful choice for a moderately active owner, as the Border Terrier requires merely thirty minutes a day on average for exercise. You can easily achieve this with free based play or regular walks.

  • Grooming

Border Terriers can be brushed on a weekly basis and bathed as needed. Even though this breed is hypoallergenic, the Border Terrier does shed its double coat when the seasons change. During this time, owners will need to help strip the shed fur off their Border Terriers.

  • Shedding

Border Terriers shed very little and are considered to be hypoallergenic.

  • Appearance

A dirt-resistance coat and scissor bite are typical of this breed, with colors ranging from blue, red, grizzle, wheaten or tan. Muscular legs are complimented with short, "V" shaped ears. Other distinctive features include an otter shaped head.

  • History

Border Terriers were developed around the English-Scottish border as a fox deterrent for sheep herders. They're wiry, weatherproof coat protected them when in the field, and their smaller size helped them dig into fox holes. They remain a popular companion for working-class families.
