Learn More About Bloodhounds

  • Temperament

Bloodhounds are gentle, patient, and agreeable, as long as their nose doesn't get in the way. They are known to be very tolerant of children, even those who climb and pester. They make great family companions, but are slow to mature. In the first year they can be curious and clumsy, and may follow their noses into trouble.

  • Health

Bloodhounds are highly susceptible to bloat (also called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) due to their deep-chested build. They should also be examined regularly for ear infections and dermatitis as their droopy ears and wrinkles can lead to health issues if they're not kept clean.

  • Activity Level

Bloodhounds have a reputation for being lazy, but they do require daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. They love exploring the area on long walks, but should always be kept on a leash. Playtime in the yard is also a great way to get their energy out, but they should be supervised. They have a tendency to dig and try to escape the yard when their nose takes over.

  • Grooming

Bloodhounds should be brushed on a weekly basis to promote hair growth, reduce skin dryness, and to prevent loose hair from spreading everywhere indoors. This breed needs to be bathed regularly and have their wrinkled skin cleaned frequently to keep away bacteria.

  • Shedding

Despite having a short coat, Bloodhounds are moderate shedders. Around twice a year, when the seasons change, Bloodhounds will shed heavily.

  • Appearance

Bloodhounds are best known for their long droopy ears and wrinkled skin, especially on the face. Their jowls and droopy eyes give them a dignified, mournful expression. They have a short, course coat that can be a combination of black, tan, liver, or red.

  • History

The Bloodhound’s origins can be traced back as early as the third century, and is known to be the oldest hound that hunts by scent. The Bloodhounds that we know were developed in Western Europe about 1,000 years ago and were used by monasteries in England and France. Today, bloodhounds are renowned for their unique looks, powerful noses, and gentle disposition.
