Black and Tan Coonhound Breed Guide

Learn More About Black and Tan Coonhounds

  • Temperament

Black and Tan Coonhounds are calm, easygoing, and love spending time with their owners. Indoors they love lounging on the couch, but outdoors they love going on walks and picking up scents with their powerful noses. Unwelcome strangers may be greeted with a bark or their trademark howl.

  • Health

Black and Tan Coonhounds are a sturdy breed with very few health problems. Their large ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infection, adn they should be screened for eye and hip issues.

  • Activity Level

These Coonhounds have a moderate energy level, and require a long walk or playtime daily. Their hunting instincts can cause them to chase a scent, so yards should be fenced and they should always be leashed on walks. When they are not playing or on a walk you can usually find them snoozing on the couch.

  • Grooming

Their short coat should be brushed weekly with a bristle brush or rubber grooming mitt, which helps remove dead hair before it falls in your home. These weekly brushings also help distribute skin oils through the coat to keep it healthy.

  • Shedding

You will typically find your Black and Tan Coonhound's hair around your home year round, but expect it to be heavier twice a year.

  • Appearance

Their short, dense coat is black with tan markings. Their long velvety ears sit back on the head and hang nicely on their shoulders. They are big, strong hounds with muscular legs.

  • History

Believe it or not, the racoon played a large role in early American history, and before the Black and Tan Coonhound there wasn't a dog equiped to hunt them. Early frontiersman crossed breeds including foxhounds and bloodhounds to create a breed unique to America, the coonhound. They were bred to have a great sense of smell, equiped to chasing racoons through the woods at night. The Black and Tan Coonhound was the first coonhound registered by the AKC in 1945.
