Beauceron Breed Guide

Learn More About Beaucerons

  • Temperament

The Beauceron was bred to be smart, calm, and fearless. They are loyal and affectionate with family, but tend to be weary of strangers at first. Beaucerons are eager to learn and please, so they aren't too difficult to train.

  • Health

Beaucerons are a deep chested breed, so they can be prone to bloat. It is important to know bloat symptoms so you can spot them early. They should also be checked for conditions like hip dysplasia, eye problems, and allergies.

  • Activity Level

Beaucerons are athletic dogs who require lots of physical and mental stimulation, and they are best suited for people with an active lifestyle. Without enough exercise, the Beauceron can become bored and destructive. These dogs are also known to excel in agility competitions.

  • Grooming

Beaucerons are heavy shedders, but their double-coat requires very little maintenance to stay healthy. Weekly brushings will keep their coat healthy, but you may want to brush more regularly during heavy shedding seasons.

  • Shedding

Their short double coat sheds heavily year round, and more heavily during the spring and fall shedding seasons.

  • Appearance

The Beauceron is a large, muscular dog with a coat that is usually black and tan, or black and tan with some gray (also called merle). Due to their short double coat, Beaucerons do not require much grooming, though they do shed heavily during the spring and fall shedding seasons.

  • History

The Beauceron breed was developed in the late Middle Ages, and they gained popularity with shepherds in France in the 19th century. They make great shepherds, as their herding techniques are quiet and calm so they don't spook the sheep. In the early 1900s the breed gained popularity with the French public, and are now used as sheep dogs and faithful family companions.
