The Affectionate and Loyal American Pit Bull Terrier

Contrary to popular belief, the American Pitbull Terrier is known for its fondness of children and friendly demeanor as much as its muscular build and athletic stamina. Although this is certainly a breed that requires careful and consistent training, these dogs are eager to please their owner and willing to work.

Learn More About American Pit Bull Terriers

  • Temperament

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a very energetic and active breed, and proper training is a must. Pit Bulls are very intelligent, but they have a tendency to be a bit stubborn during training, so firm, repetitive obedience training is essential. Personality-wise, Pit Bulls are extremely affectionate, friendly, and loyal, but they are often misunderstood. While they make loving, lifelong companions, American Pit Bull Terriers have a strong prey drive because of their past, so they should be introduced to small children and other animals carefully. However, this doesn't mean that they don't do well with them. Once properly introduced, Pitbulls are good with children and make great playmates and protectors.

  • Health

The Pit Bull's diverse breeding background makes them a healthy breed, but they can be prone to some genetic diseases. They should be screened regularly for conditions like hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and kneecap dislocation.

  • Activity Level

A natural and persistent athlete, this is a breed that benefits from an active lifestyle and healthy social life. Their friendly nature makes them perfect for the dog park, or long neighborhood walks. Family activities can benefit from the company of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

  • Grooming

Their coat is very easy to maintain, and you can expect to spend much less time grooming a Pit Bull than you would other breeds. Their coat stays shiny and healthy with once a week brushings, and they only need bathed once a year unless they get especially dirty or muddy.

  • Shedding

American Pit Bull Terriers shed moderately throughout the year. This breed sheds heavily in the spring and fall when seasons change.

  • Appearance

The stocky, muscular and athletic build sets this breed apart from nearly any other member of the terrier family. Known for their powerful legs, chest, and head, the American Pit Bull Terrier also has widely set eyes and erect, pointed ears. Their long, whip-like tail is also distinctive.

  • History

The American Pit Bull Terrier originated in England in the 19th century as a cross between a "bully" type dog and a terrier. These early pups resembled the American Pit Bull that we know today, but were much smaller. Over the years, there was much disagreement over whether or not this breed should be registered in the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC finally decided to register pit bulls in 1972, but under a different name: the American Staffordshire Terrier, as "pit bull" had a negative connotation at the time. While once physically identical, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are now two distinct breeds, but are both bred for their tenacity, athleticism, and courage.
