The Energetic but Agreeable American Leopard Hound

No strangers to hunting the likes of bears and cougars, the American Leopard Hound is a smart dog who demonstrates a protective authority among family members. Prone to wandering due to following scents, the breed is luckily easily trained and affectionate with children. Although they can thrive in nearly any temperature, the American Leopard Hound requires an enormous amount of daily exercise.

Learn More About American Leopard Hounds

  • Temperament

A lot of activity is a must for this tree-based hunting breed! The American Leopard Hound is ideal for those living in rural areas with lots of space and running room to spare. Their demeanor is more to the outgoing side, with an extreme need to please their owner.

  • Health

Most American Leopard Hounds are healthy, but breeders of these pups should be very diligent in their genetic testing. When two merle-colored American Leopards are bred there is a chance of creating what is known as a double-merle. These puppies can carry a higher risk of being blind, deaf, or sight and hearing impaired.

  • Activity Level

A large yard, hour long daily walks, and entertaining agility training will be welcomed by the American Leopard Hound. Although their exercise requirements are not the most intensive, you should plan to meet them to avoid potentially destructive behavior.

  • Grooming

Brushing their short and dense coat once a week along with the occasional bath is usually enough to keep their coat healthy. Their nails grow abnormally quickly, and should be clipped regularly to prevent discomfort.

  • Shedding

American Leopard Hounds shed their double coat seasonally. Their short coat tends to fall off and float onto furniture and clothes, so regular vacuuming and lint rollers may be a necessity.

  • Appearance

This medium-sized breed is typified by its leopard like coloration which appears in splotch-type patterns across the entire length of the trunk, legs, head and tail. The nose is sharp and comes to a point at the end, with the ears long and hanging by the sides unless engaged in activity.

  • History

It is a agreed that American Leopard Hounds are one of the oldest tree dog breeds in America, but their exact origins are unknown. Some experts believe that Spanish Conquistadors mixed their dogs with native Mexican hounds, and others believe that the breeds origins took place entirely in the US by breeding various hounds. Whatever the origins, they are widely known as the most agreeable tree dog breed.
