Akbash Dog Breed Guide

Learn More About Akbash Dogs

  • Temperament

True to their guard dog heritage, Akbash Dogs are loyal, fearless, and steadfast. They're quick enough to fend off predators and self-sufficient enough to recognize and respond to potential threats without the need for human assistance. Despite their intimidating appearance, Akbash are docile dogs that make loving and calm companions. They get along nicely with children and are great family pets. However, they are cautious of outsiders and may get hostile if an unfamiliar dog enters their domain. Because Akbash Dogs mature slowly in comparison to other breeds, owners should anticipate their “puppy phase” to continue into adulthood.

  • Health

When properly cared for, an Akbash Dog should live for around 10 to 12 years. This breed can be prone to some minor health concerns like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hypothyroidism.

  • Activity Level

The Akbash dog has fairly low energy requirements, but they should still get daily activity. A daily, 30-minute walk is typically enough exercise for an Akbash. These smart dogs also require a decent amount of mental stimulation.

  • Grooming

The Akbash's double coat should be brushed at least once a week, and even more frequently during the spring when they blow their coats. You should bathe your Akbash Dog as needed.

  • Shedding

The Akbash Dog's coat sheds heavily, so it's important to keep up with brushing to remove loose hair. They are not considered a hypoallergenic breed.

  • Appearance

Akbash Dogs have a thick double coat that is typically white or off-white in color. They are fairly large dogs with long legs and a sturdy build. Some Akbash Dogs have double dewclaws on the rear legs.

  • History

The Akbash Dog is a rare breed of dog that’s native to western Turkey. Though the actual origins of the breed are unknown, experts agree that it is a very old breed. These large white dogs were developed by villagers to guard sheep from predators, and they continue to do so today. The Akbash Dog mainly remained in Turkey until the 1960s. The first Akbash was brought to the United States in 1978 and a breeding program was created. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize the breed, the United Kennel Club (UKC) registered the Akbash in 1998 as part of the Guardian dog group.
